Jesus talked about worrying in Matthew chapter 6 quite a lot. He asked how can we add one cubit to our stature? In other words, how can we add any length of time to our lives, or change anything at all for that matter from worrying? In fact, some studies have shown worry can actually shorten life because it affects our health adversely.

The word “worry” is really just a nicer way to say as defined:

  • Give way to anxiety or unease
  • Allow one’s mind to dwell on difficulty or troubles
  • Fret
  • Agonize
  • Overthink
  • Panic
  • Lose sleep
  • Get worked up
  • Get stressed
  • Torment oneself

When we think of worrying in those terms, I believe we can get to the source of it. Ourselves. Not our circumstances, but how we react to them. The situations that will arise in our lives won’t change a bit by us worrying and staying up late crying over them. They will still be there in the morning when we wake up, waiting for us to pick them back up and carry them throughout our day. Nothing changes by worrying!

It has been said; Planning for tomorrow is time well spent; worrying about tomorrow is time wasted.

When we are driven by fear over what may or may not be, we find it difficult to trust God. We actually let our plans interfere with God’s. I myself have been guilty on occasion. Totally trusting in God is hard, but essential for His plans to carry out in our lives. Jesus told us to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you (us).” Mat. 6:33.

When we focus on the One who solves problems and not on the problems, things work out. Sounds kinda backwards from what the world says. Truth is, our solutions are just going to sit there and not move at all, no matter how much worry we can conjure up. We can get up early. Sit up late and eat the bread of sorrows until we are miserably full and guess what? It’s in vain. The Word says “He gives His beloved sleep”. Ps. 127:2 Why? Because when we have trusted in Him, He works on working things out, and we can stop tormenting ourselves and get some rest.
